To see a Montana sapphire in an antique piece of jewelry means it was likely made just either side of the turn of the 20th century, because the stones were first discovered by gold prospectors in the late 1800s and made their way to Tiffany and Co. And other high end jewelers, who used them in many styles of jewelry, beginning in the 1890s. There is no date on this sleek Sloane & Co. Pin, but Frank T. Sloane and his father began using their name on the jewelry business in 1895. They began in southern Manhattan and eventually moved to Newark, NJ. This particular item is a serene pin that has lost the dramatic swirls and sensuality of Art Nouveau and seems more at home in the Edwardian or up and coming Art Deco age. The Montana sapphire is sparkling and gorgeous, and a good size, measuring 4 mm in diameter (a one-carat Montana sapphire is considered very big).
