The official chief engraver at the Royal Mint from 1828 to 1851 created the original design for Una and the Lion. His name was William Wyon , and he remains well known and respected among coin collectors due to his impressive output and artistic skill. Written by English poet Edmund Spenser, provided the inspiration for Wyon’s illustration of Una standing next to an imposing lion. Wyon’s design was originally manufactured for the gold Five-Sovereign piece commemorating the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign. In Wyon’s striking illustration, he made a bold move in casting the young queen as the legendary Una, for a British monarch had never before been depicted as a fictional character on a coin.
